# Download Youtube Video Transcripts Captions

If you find a video with captions, you can download the captions file by going to this URL- http://video.google.com/timedtext?lang=en&v=VIDEO_ID, where you should replace VIDEO_ID with the ID of the YouTube video.

For Eg: I took this video (link) by Matt Cutts. The video id is WJ6CtBmaIQM, using it we get http://video.google.com/timedtext?lang=en&v=WJ6CtBmaIQM (link) which generates an XML file containing the caption transcript.

You can use it to create a subtitle (.srt) file or use an online tag remover like wordoff to extract only text from the xml file.

Here is the 1st few lines of the transcript : Today’s question comes from Brian, in Seattle, Washington. Brian asks, Many are talking about losses of traffic with longtail searches." And he points to a webmasterworld url. "I was wondering if you could give us an update on what is happening with Google right now? Caffeine update? Algorithm change? Temporary?" Ok, fantastic question! A lot of webmasters have been talking about it, so I’m glad I have a chance to address it.

You can view any youtube video with captions here as it displays it clearly as a paragraph beside the video (see pic). This useful web application uses a framework called Google App Engine, which also lets google users add subtitles and captions to any video.
