If you a Firefox 4 beta user then you know after the beta 5 release, it switches on Direct2D graphics acceleration by default for Windows 7 users. It was intended to bring  performance improvements but it comes with not so smooth font rendering leading to a hazy blurry text in Firefox 4.

Fixing Unclear Fonts in Firefox 4 Beta

Step 1 : Go to about:config from address bar.

Step 2 : Search for gfx.direct2d

Step 3 : Double Click it to set it to True.

Now, the fonts will look better as it used to in its stable version.

Also note, Microsoft has released a new update, KB2454826. In this update, according to the KB article, D2d1.dll, Fntcache.dll, Dwrite.dll, D3d10_1.dll and D3d10_1core.dll is updated to version which solves font related graphics issues in rendering. Windows 7 users might want to test this update for better font performance.

Alex Angas : Just tried the Windows update but this made no difference. Ho hum!

Debajyoti Das : @Alex Angas: You also have to enable that font service as mentioned ... from the about:config window

Peter Farrer : I have FF4 with win 7 sp1 and new graphics drivers. I have had to use your fix, my page rendering for sprites is slow now, also had problems with javascript stopping when using firebug. To make matters worse i cannot go back to FF 3. not happy with this browser any more. Google must be laughing.

reimon : Man, this blurry fonts thing was driving me crazy. I tried the Anti-Aliasing Tuner add-on which didn't work as I expected. This is the ONLY solution for me!, thank you!
