This is not one of those plugins. Have you ever noticed that the ads on your site are not that relevant to the post in which they are showing? This is a normal problem, because Google tries to read your entire page to get the best ad for your site.

Popular : Strategies to Improve Adsense eCPM

Adsense Section Targeting

What the AdSense Section Targeting feature allows you to do is to specify to Google, which parts of the content of your article are the ones that AdSense should take into consideration when deciding which ads to serve on that page.

Also See Where to Place Adsense in Blogs for Maximum CTR

How to Add Section Targeting in Wordpress Post Content Automatically

So how do you tell Google which ads to serve on your blog?

Easy, there are two lines of code you should add inside the HTML of your single post to achieve this.

<!– google_ad_section_start –> : Put this before the content that has the relevant text you want for ads

<!– google_ad_section_end –> : Put this after the content that has the relevant text you want for ads

If you are familiar with editing code, you can put this before and after the WordPress hook "the_content()"

Advanced AdSense WordPress Plugin

For those of you who do not code very well, but can install a WordPress plugin, just download this little plugin from Jim Gaudet. Just activate the plugin and go to the options screen. From there you only have 2 options

Content or Tags : The Plugin can tell Google to use your Tags or the Content of your post for the Adsense Ads.

Download Advanced AdSense : Click Here

Google adsense announced that they’re extending the beta to publishers in a number of English-speaking countries including, but not limited to, Australia, Canada, India, Ireland, the U.K., and the U.S. Incase you are not a adsense publisher read how to get approved by adsense.

Adsense Category Filtering

As a reminder, category filtering lets you prevent ads from up to 5 specific categories such as religion, politics, and dating from appearing on your pages. Your filters will be applied to ads in English, regardless of how they’re targeted.

In addition, you’ll be able to see the percentage that each category contributes to your earnings, which can help you understand any revenue impact you might notice as a result of filtering.
Based on feedback from our initial beta testers, we’ve also made a few improvements to the feature:

Adsense impression impact: To give you a better sense of how many ads you’d be filtering, we’ve now added an extra column to show you the percentage of ad impressions on your pages which fall into each category.

More accurate percentages: Ad impression and earnings percentages are now calculated based on impressions from the previous 30 days instead of three. This extended time frame should provide a more accurate picture of the types of ads you’re receiving and how much revenue they’re contributing.

Category descriptions: We’ve added details about each category directly within your account to help you understand the types of ads that may fall into each.

Source

How to Use Adsense Category Filtering

Go to your Adsense Account

Click AdSense Setup > Ad Review Center

Using – Look at the screenshot above. It shows Recent Earnings(The percentage of total earnings recently generated by ads in this category.) and the Recent Ad Impressions(The percentage of total ad impressions recently generated by ads in this category.)

Clearly you can see for my blog Politics and D & Supp. have generated impressions but didn’t produce any earnings. This is because the people visiting my blog are not interested on those ads. (Also See Adsense Placement in Blogs for Maximum CTR)

So its better to remove those ads which give you no earning as they might be replaced with some niche ad in your adslot which might be related enough to make you some adsense money. (Also See Optimizing Adsense for Increasing Earnings)

I decided to gather some of the best tips or rules for use and optimization of Adsense. Some are the result of all tests and optimizations I made in my blog for almost a year. Others are the result of posts I read on other blogs. Some techniques have been confirmed or even suggested by the Adsense support team itself.

Essential Tips & Tactics to Improve & Optimize Adsense Ads

1. If you do not have Adsense account established, wait for the first site to bring you content enough to be adopted. Tip : How to Get Approved by Adsense & Not Wait 6 Months

2. The terms of use are the same Adsense account to view. Not being aware of the rules is not an excuse for being banned. We also have make sure to know frequent updates to the terms of use as happened recently with the positioning of images beside blocks of ads. Don’t Fall Prey into scams to generate clicks or traffic. Google has automatic detection mechanisms that generate alerts in such cases and can be checked manually.

3. There is no rule of thumb that apply to any site or any type of niche. The best result of tests on different placements, colors and formats. One of the keys to success is to test … test … test … Read : How to Improve eCPM for Blogs ?

4. 95% of information that can learn about Adsense optimization is available free on the Internet. It is not worth spending money on books or ebooks. Use the new features offered by Adsense integrated in to the resources section. But one book is really very popular available for free is Joel Comm’s Adsense Secrets.

5. Follow Other Blogs of the Same Niche – See what other successful bloggers are placing their ads on their blog. There is a lot to learn about format and link colours.

6. Traffic is the key to success! Much good that is a niche market, if the traffic a site is small, the gains will never be great. Investing in real traffic and have users who come from various sources, especially from search engines is crucial.

7. The better the relevance of content to the advertiser and the quality vs. quantity of text, the better the value of each click. It is worth investing in good content pages, although they are visited less often. If pages with visits from search engines, the better the result. See : List of 101 Top paying Adsense Keywords with maximum CPC

8. Ads that appear first in the code tend to have a higher value. On the other hand should always be placed ads in the visible part of the site when it opens (above the fold). The CTR should be more of these. Use the section targeting to focus on specific content.

9. In the end of blog posts or news articles, putting a block of 336 × 280 or similar works very well . These convert very well because they usually display relevant ads, and when you demand more information about what you just read, tends to continue your search in the contextual advertising available.

10. Colors – the ads should wear the color scheme of the site. Usually work best when the color of links = the same color used in sitelinks. Although usually assumed that the blue used in the default links of any page may work better. The use of color will depend on the integration or not the site design. Do not use the standard templates of Adsense. These are widely used and will result in a lower CTR, Ad-blindness.

11. Blending – use the same color for the border and background of the ad. To better integrate these must be equal to the background of the page where they are placed. When the ad is then mixed with the text should not have visible border or the background has to be distinguished from the rest area of the page. Ads can not be part of a more prominent site. Can not take ad-blindness. Tip : Where to Place Adsense in Blogs for Maximum CTR ?

12. You can use the Feature that switches between up to 4 different color schemes (see right). The change could take place only in the color of the link and it works very well. Its use may be interesting in forums or on sites where users spend much time online and are frequent visitors.

13. With the new rules to avoid accidental clicks, it is interesting to give more emphasis to the color of the url of the ad. Result in greater awareness and a tendency to increase the CTR.

14. The larger formats tend to convert better, eg 336 × 280. They also occupy more space and sometimes the ads smaller, but well integrated into the design or to better position are more profitable.

15. The larger formats should be enabled whenever possible to display text ads and image. The competition for space will increase and the variety of ads, too. Rectangle Blocks makes the best out of promotional videos & images. Video ads have a higher value.

16. The link units are to have a format in mind and it consumes little space. Since you can have 3 of these blocks may be more important to their use. They have the disadvantages that it takes two clicks to convert a first in a keyword and following one of the ads that appear and you can not customize the colors of the page where the ads appear.

17. Adsense for search not normally makes well daily. However using this format we always add a great feature that properly optimized and results in a better integrated experience for users of the site. It can also be used to help understand what users look at our site through the reporting functionality available.

18. The use of custom channels and url should be used for a proper understanding of CTR and eCPM for each ad. In large sites prefer to use criteria for the sections of the site. In blogs use the criteria in accordance with the pla
cement or format of the block. You can use up to 5 criteria for each ad, however I like to use only one not to confuse the analysis in the reports.

19. You must think in advance of a site or design a theme for a blog for opportunities that will have to integrate the blocks of ads (adsense on blogs). The dimensions of the banners are more common to see color. Why have a column of 140 pixels wide where 160 pixels block Adsense are available ?

20. Well, this place has been blank for comments and suggestion from you.

If you are a newbie Blogger or Webmaster and if you are a applying for adsense to monetize your site, then you might have faced the situation where Google asks you to wait for atleast six months to qualify for your adsense account and get approved to show ad slots in your site. 6 Months is too much a long wait and there is no need to lose adsense dollars waiting six months

How to Get Approved by Google Adsense without for 6 (six) months – Make your Adsense Account Active

What we found is that Google is not nearly as picky as they make themselves sound to be. The trick is to make your one site or blog in such a way, that you are just providing good content. Don’t worry, once you’re approved you can use that code wherever you want – so put it on other sites. But for the purposes of getting approved, try to limit to just content, content and more content!

There are 3 Main elements that you should focus on when getting Approved by Google Adsense

1. Site look and feel – Make sure to atleast have a presentable Blog– even if it is just a few tables and a solid background color. Avoid using tacky backgrounds or unprofessional color contrasts. Tip : Choosing the right template for your blog

2. Content – The most important – Google believes in content. If you try to get a website with just a few pages approved, I don’t think you will have any luck. You need to have at least 15-20 pages, preferably, 15-20 pages of Articles/Post Pages, aka content. See : Writing Professional Blog Posts to Improve Content

3. Traffic – Many experts say that Google Adsense team looks to see what kind of traffic you have and that they do not approve new sites with no traffic. My experience says that these experts are FULL of it. BUT, just to be safe, before you submit your site for approval – try to get your site some traffic. Tip : How to Increase Blog Traffic

Here are useful tips you need to make the entire Adsense Approval process Easier and Quicker

Get content from article directories – just put those articles in your site, getting 15-20 is easy.

Before you submit your site for approval, post at some forums with your website’s link in the signature file – this will help you get some immediate traffic.

Make a very simple website with 15-20 articles, a contact us page, a privacy policy and the typical disclaimer.

Some Must Have Pages in your Blog While Getting Approved By Adsense

Well there are some must have pages in you blog which Google would necessarily want to see while approving your Blog Site for the Adsense Program. Plus you should have the links to these pages in the Home Page of your Blog. They Are…

Privacy Policy ( Compulsory for Adsense – If you don’t have one Simple Copy <a href="http://www.snaphow.com/privacy-policy"rel="nofollow" >SnapHow’s Privacy Policy)

About Page (This is Optional but effective – See SnapHow’s About Page)

Contact Us – (No one Likes Anonymous Bloggers – Optional )

That’s it – you’re ready to get approved for Google Adsense. (Pic Show Adsense Pin Envelope you will get after 6 months) I know this sound too easy, but trust me, it is. And remember, if you do not get approved, you can always fix things and try again.

Recently I am noticing a sharp drop in my Adsense eCPM. I don’t know why it happened but I was speaking to various other bloggers using adsense on their blogs and they too confirmed that it was the same with them. But some Bloggers said they noticed that eCPM had increased for the past few weeks.

Now what I am trying is to Find a solution for this problem of Sudden Low eCPM Rates of our Adsense Accounts.

After Looking around various Blog Posts & Googling I have found the following Reasons that affect our eCPM and here are some problems and their solutions for the low adsense eCPM.

Reasons for low Adsense eCPM for Blog

Smart Pricing – Our Blogs probably got Smart Priced. Which Happens people click ads, visit the site displaying the ad, but doesn’t convert into a sale (purchase,download,sign-up,etc). So, that’s a total loss of the advertisers money. Really? No, Because the Adsense Publisher is Penalized for it. How? That Right – Reduce the eCPM (other factors involved like ROI etc).

Lack of Ad Relevancy – Well this was supposed to be because our blog don’t always post about stuff mostly posted on the blogs. Exactly, I have been recently posted about Jai ho Remix, RapidShare Password, high speed photos, Freida Pinto which are not relevant to my niche. So, it strains the ad bots to show relevant ads. I know because I am getting a lot of Slumdog Millionaire Song Download Ads on many pages on my blog. So, This has really hurt my earnings.

Less Clicks – Obviously Lack of Ad Relevancy = Less Number of Clicks = Less Dollars.

Solution to Improve eCPM for Blogger

Solution to Adsense Smart Pricing – Smart pricing affects an entire account. It is not on a per page or per site basis. Also, One poorly converting site can result in smart pricing impacting an entire account, even sites completely unrelated to the poorly converting one. Finally, Smart pricing is evaluated each week. So removing ads from sites you suspect are converting poorly, for a week could result in seeing an adjustment to a higher smart pricing percent.

Improving Ad Relevancy – The best way to improve ad relevancy in your blogger blog is to Section Targeting. Although I haven’t any change in earnings but have seen a bit relevant ads showing Up. Check this Tutorial on Section Targeting at Google Help Group. Implement it on your blog ASAP.

Improving Clicks – Previously, I always used to match the Ads to the Content, means Title = Link color in Blog. The Rest Text & Url black. But that’s wrong according to Adsense Gurus. Like in Joel Comm’s Book I learnt that that Blue is the best Title Color for Ads to Stand out of Content and not look like an Ad. The Best Blues are #000080 , #0000FF & #006699 . Try it, it helped me a lot.

Focusing on the Niche – Well, Now I get to know. This means you have to always write posts in a blog which is related to your blog’s Topic. Mean Don’t get stupid like me writing about how little latika was sold by her father on a tech blog like this one. Also Read How to Write Targetted & Focussed Blog Posts.

The Best Position & Size – The Best Size is 336×280 Large Rectangle. And the best position in Just below the Post Title and above the content (see this blog). Also a 468×60 Text Ad just below the post.

Solutions By other Blogger & Readers

This is the Portion which will be updated frequently with the best Comments from Bloggers & Readers.

Abhishek (College Friend) : Ya, great post dude. I have been also having low eCPM on my adsense account. I’m one clueless and paranoid publisher. But, I tried to Improve it by showing all the 3 as Image ads. the CTR becomes very less but the eCPM increases a lot after 3-4 days.

Pavan Kumar (TechPavan) – Not in general, but for you in specific I feel these things might improve your earnings and get you out of smart pricing.

1. Remove link ad units entirely from your blog. You currently seem to use two such units one in navigation pane and other below the post. I guess the top one gets you much clicks and the reason is first time visitors get confused that it is the navigation bar. And I think the lower one gets NO or very less clicks. Also, you might have observed, their clicks won’t pay you good, low ecpm results.

2. Remove the ads from sidebar. Sidebar ads are mostly resulted by targeting your navigation area keywords which are not so good to see. And your home page is a mixture of all contents and hence it does not concentrate on a specific niche which results is ads which are just better than psa, to be specific in India, they are bharatmatrimony and monster jobs. Removing sidebar unit entirely may reduce the total clicks you get, but the earnings would increase better.

And what I feel is ctr has no relation with smart pricing. I have ad units with ctr less than 1, but they pay the normal expected price as any other ad on my pages.

Harsh (Shoutmeloud) – Pavan If I’m not wrong text ad link units will not effect your ecpm in any ways, so its best way to maximize your revenue using smart placement.
Correct me if I’m wrong.

Honey Singh (HoneytechBlog) - As @Pavan already described “Text Link units” works best in patch with the navigation and most of the blogger use this kind of style. Moreover ads in single posts perform better than anywhere else. The yielding units in the single posts are rectangles and you should use text ads after the post title.
The ads after the post title results in maximum income.

Mohit (Techeguide) – Adsense Smart Pricing is what Google mark publishers who have placed ads on more than one website/blog with the same adsense account, if one of those blog/website doesn’t perform well than thi
s’ll affect the overall account. I totally agree with Pavan that CTR has no relation with Smart Pricing.

@ Honey Singh
Also I’ve read in Adsense TOS if you’re placing ads below the Title than you should add “Sponsored Links” or “Sponsors” as the Title of the ads.

More to Come

A great way for Adsense Publishers to Optimize their Adsense earnings is to block irrelevant ads which sometimes show up on their sites. Many times it is has happened that Dating Adsense Ads (like the one below) Crop up and Ruin the Look of the Site.

This is an Adsense Ad from Fropper (see right) which always used to Show up in this Blog until I used the Adsense Allowed Sites Feature to Remove.

Using Adsense Category Filtering to Remove Irrelevant Ads on your Site

From the Adsense Team :

We’ll be launching category filtering as a beta to a small group of publishers to collect initial feedback about the feature. Here’s a preview of what the feature currently looks like, but please keep in mind that the layout and categories may change based on feedback from beta test participants.

Although we’re not able to expand the limited beta to additional publishers at this point, we wanted to give you a glimpse into one of the ways we’re working to give you more control over your ads so you can ensure a positive experience for your users. We’ll continue to refine this feature, and hope to be able to roll it out more widely in coming months. Please stay tuned to the blog for any updates, and feel free to leave us a comment in the meantime.

From their Update it Seems this new Feature in Adsense going to be rolled out Very Soon. Well I am waiting for this Update. As I think it might improve Adsense Earnings … What do you Say ?
