Read Emails in Vista Desktop by Installing Gmail Gadget

This is my favorite Vista gadget by far. I use Gmail all the time, so having a display on my Sidebar makes the email checking process much faster. All you do is put your username and password in, and it checks your emails. It seems to keep updated very well, so as soon as you receive an email, this tool will tell you.

Using the Gmail Reader sidebar gadget for Windows Vista, you can be notified on new items in your Gmail inbox as well as browse and access the last 20 mails you received.

How to Install Vista Gmail Gadget in Sidebar

First download vista Gmail gadget from the Windows Live Gallery.

How to Install Vista Gmail Gadget in Desktop SidebarHere’s how you configure the gadget:

  • First, download and install the gadget.
  • The gadget will appear in your desktop.
  • Right click the gadget and click Options.
  • Fill in your Gmail account details and click Login.
  • Once your login is successful , click OK.

In case you would like to customize the sound played when new mail arrives, proceed as following:

  • Open Windows Explorer and navigate to the following path: <your_user_name>/appdata/local/microsoft/windows sidebar/gadgets/Gmail Gadget.
  • Place your own .WAV file in the folder. Rename your old sound file from NOTIFY to NOTIFYOLD and then name your new sound file NOTIFY.

Note: As the Gmail password you provide is kept in Clear Text – please make sure you don’t install the gadget on public computers!
