What is Link Building ? Importance of Link Building for SEO

Just Google for the term “Link building” and you could see the importance of link building. Did you see results like these : “Link building services” , “Link building company” etc,. ? Those are companies concentrating specially on Link building and that shows how significant links are but how we bloggers fail to do it properly or fail to understand its basics.

So let me tell you what really link building means :

1. Link building is not starting a free blog specially for adding links :

This is what I see many bloggers do.They either start a blog in BlogSpot or WordPress and start linking to their main blog .A main factor in Google ranking is the domain age.So never do that .There is nothing useful if you link from a brand new blog

2. Link building is not using a single domain to build links :

As I said earlier bloggers either start several blogs for link spamming or either use a single blog / domain to spread links.This is the ultimate foolish thing that could be done in  SEO.The result of these acts are definitely getting banned from Google.

3. Link Building is Relevancy :

A proper link building approach is to place links on sites that are relevant to you. For example an entertainment site would gain more if it were to link another entertainment site instead of a SEO blog.

4. Link building is steadiness :

Building links steadily is what makes link building a time consuming but the most effective process in SEO.Make sure you build links slowly but steadily  – like do not get 100 links today and be idle for the rest of the month . Be patient and be focused on your end results. Always remember that SEO definitely takes months and not a few seconds to do.If you want more details about SEO just visit any SEO company and see how their approaches are towards SEO.

So does that mean irrelevant links are useless ?

No. I did not say that.I just said those kind of links might not help so much as that of a relevant link.

5. Reciprocal links are not dead :

This is the most popular discussion in every forum nowadays.This is definitely false.The real answer is that they have lost importance. Its not that they are completely dead.So it is good to link to other bloggers.But as I said earlier make link building a steady process.

6. Use different keyword phrases for better results :

If you are going to place a reciprocal link or a one way link , it is better to focus on the keyword first.Say you are going to have three reciprocal links with three fellow bloggers and you are aiming at the keyword “Blogger tips” – then it is better to tell those bloggers to link this way :

a) Tips for new Bloggers
b) Blogger Tips
c) Blogger tools and tips

As you could see above although you are aiming for the phrase “Blogger tips” it is better to use variants of those keywords as anchor text than using the same phrase in all the reciprocal inks.

So what would happen if we use same keyword phrases in hundreds of  backlinks that I do ?

This is a difficult question.Because you could have seen several of the blogger templates having a backlinks in the footer of the template – they might be used by thousands of bloggers.And they mostly will have the same anchor text.But I  observed that the bloggers who produce templates are not slapped by Google.

So my answer would be this:

If your links are also from several other domains [not only from those obtained from blogger templates] then Google has a good feeling about you.So placing same anchor text everywhere might not work out for everyone.

I recommend Article submission sites for getting backlinks since they are all one way backlinks.Although I am not going to discuss about ways to get backlinks, you may check about article submission here : Blogger tips for effective link building.

Hope you got a better picture of link building.All these points have been discussed by me and several other webmasters in forums and I am happy to share what I knew.These tips might be familiar to bloggers who already have active discussions in forums and for bloggers who follow regular SEO bloggers.But for beginners, hope it is a good resource.
